Life Legacy


JOHN R. SCOTT, age 81, a longtime Portage resident, passed away Monday, July 15, 2013.

Survived by his son, Terry Scott of Portage; granddaughter, Mary (Larry) West of GA; brother, Andrew (Judy) Scott of NV, brothers-in-law: Deacon Robert (late Mary) Bonta of Portage, John (Virginia) Bartfai of NY; two sisters-in-law: Helen (late Joseph) Korhel of CA, Irene (Kirk) Rusbasan of AZ. Preceded in death by his wife Veronica “Ronnie” Scott on June 27, 2013; daughter, Sandy Scott; brother, David Scott, and parents, Mary and David Scott.

Mr. Scott was a longtime member of Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church and choir. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 9114. He was the Plumbing Inspector and Fire Commissioner for the City of Portage, Portage Township Assessor for 16 years, and Porter Co. Assessor for four years. He was a retired Roll Turner from the Roll Shop, Gary Works, U.S. Steel for 35 years. John was a member of The Chorus of the Dunes and Daily News Quartet. He sculpted the Crucifix for Nativity Church when it was in the hall and made the altars also. John designed and sculpted the “Moment” for the Time Capsule. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and member of American Legion Post 260, and a graduate of Tolleston High School, Class of 1950.

Family and friends may call at Pruzin Brothers Funeral Service, 2700 Willowcreek Rd., Portage on Friday, July 19, 2013 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Rosary and parish rosary at 6:00 p.m. and Legion service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. DIRECTLY from Nativity of Our Savior Catholic, 2949 Willowcreek Rd., Portage with Rev. Andrew Corona officiating. There will be one half-hour of visitation at church prior to service. At rest Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Memorials preferred to Nativity of Our Savior, Bishop Carl Mengeling Endowment Fund.
